Jannik Sinner retakes ATP No. 1 from Carlos Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner

The rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz extends beyond their battle for Grand Slam trophies this season. The two top-ranked players are also engaged in a persistent tug-of-war for the ATP's No. 1 ranking.

Sinner officially reclaimed the top spot on Monday after his triumph at the Paris Masters, ending Alcaraz's nearly two-month stint at the summit. However, due to the specific calculations of the ranking system, Alcaraz is poised to retake the No. 1 position the following Monday.

The margin between the Italian and the Spaniard is razor-thin, with Sinner currently holding 11,500 points to Alcaraz's 11,250. This narrow gap means their performances at the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin will be the decisive factor in determining the year-end No. 1. The imminent shift next week is due to points from last year's ATP Finals falling off. Sinner will lose the 1,500 points he earned for winning the 2023 title, while Alcaraz will drop only 200 points from his group-stage exit. This will readjust their totals to 10,000 for Sinner and 11,050 for Alcaraz.

The duel for the top is exclusively a two-man race. A significant chasm separates them from the rest of the field, as No. 3 Alexander Zverev (5,560), No. 4 Taylor Fritz (4,735), and No. 5 Novak Djokovic (4,580) trail far behind. Sinner and Alcaraz have built their massive points hauls by dominating the biggest stages, including splitting the year's four major titles: Sinner won the Australian Open, Alcaraz claimed the French Open, Sinner triumphed at Wimbledon, and Alcaraz captured the US Open.
